摘要

The main focus of this study was to determine the effects of the National Society of Hispanic Masters of Business Administration's (NSHMBA) Summer Enrichment Program on Hispanic students' PSAT scores and general achievement in high school mathematics. The Summer Enrichment Program, which utilized an innovative curriculum, focused on preparing Hispanic students for college-track mathematics courses and improving communication and language skills. Twenty-three first generation Hispanic Arlington Public School students were selected for the three summer sessions based on their remedial mathematics placement and compared with 25 Hispanic students who were placed into "college-bound" mathematics courses.
Using the Multiple Confidence-Interval Procedures for the Kruskal-Wallis Test, results of this study revealed that the NSHMBA Summer Enrichment Program was successful in that the students from the experimental group did as well or better than the control group on mathematical achievement. This study encourages variations in instruction that are needed to accommodate various learning styles that are encountered in the classroom, especially when balancing English and mathematics instruction for ESL (English as a Second Language) students.
