HIGH FREQUENCY OHMIC LOSSES IN TERAHERTZ FREQUENCY RANGE CW KLYNOTRONS

Reliable simulation of operating parameters is a very demanding problem to be solved prior to developing electron-vacuum devices. One of the most challenging simulation tasks is how to estimate high-frequency losses and take them properly into account. In this paper, we suggest using optical microscopy methods to analyze surface roughness in the klynotron's slow-wave structures manufactured by electro discharge machining, and simulate the thermal load on the components of such slow-wave structures for the wave ranges of 2 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.33 mm. This research allowed us to estimate the high-frequency ohmic losses in slow waves, taking into account the surface roughness of real slow-wave structures. The temperature gradient was determined both along the segment's height and along the comb base. The dependence between an electron beam precipitated at the slow-wave structure and the electric conductivity of its surface layer has been estimated. The found values of the high-frequency ohmic loss have been used to simulate klynotron's output power relative to the operation beam current at a fixed operation frequency. The operation characteristics of 136 GHz and 301 GHz klynotrons obtained in the experiments and simulations were in a good agreement both in terms of quality and quantity.
