Increasing the Speed of Maximum Correlation Air Navigation Systems

ABSTRACT

One of the basic requirements to maximum correlation air navigation systems (MCANS) is the ability to real-time precision measurements of ground-based object coordinates that are to be performed by the fast operation equipment on the board.
The operation of MCANS is based on forming a current image (CI) for the object to be recognized and comparising it with the reference image (RI) stored in the memory of a dedicated inboard computer (DC).
Based on the result of comparison, a decision is made whether the object belongs to any category of specified objects of recognition, whereupon the control system generates a command to correct an aircraft trajectory.
A characteristic feature of MCANS is the stringent temporal limitation of the object visualization process for navigation purposes.
The navigation systems should possess the capability of distinguishing orientation aids against complex backgrounds round the clock and under all climatic conditions and be characterized by precision and noise immunity. Fulfillment of the set of complex and contradictory requirements to MCANS has become possible through the use of informative infrared (IR), radar- and radiometer-based (RM) millimeter-wave (MMW) navigation systems, as well as hybrids of these. This suggests a necessity of quickly operating with large data arrays.
