AN OPTICAL BAND FREQUENCY DETECTOR BASED ON ISOTROPIC STRUCTURES

ABSTRACT

It is well known that communication systems with frequency modulation are characterized by a better noise immunity as compared with the widespread amplitude modulation-based ones. However, despite their wide application in the radio frequency range, there are no optical band systems of the kind at all. One of the reasons is the lack of frequency detectors for the mentioned frequency range. This paper is the first to suggest frequency detectors for the near-infrared band (850 nm) built around layered isotropic structures. The operation principle is described and basic performance characteristics of the devices are calculated. The detection in the given devices is performed in two stages. At the first one frequency changes are converted into respective amplitude variations, while at the second the obtained amplitude-modulated oscillations are demodulated using the conventional amplitude detectors. Three possible kinds of the detectors are considered, specifically, in-phase, inverse and balanced ones. The advantages and shortcomings of the devices are analyzed and perspectives of their application in the communication systems are discussed. The obtained results can be used for designing optical communication systems with frequency modulation.
