BROKEN-SYMMETRY TWO-INSERT RECTANGULAR WAVEGUIDE SECTIONS PROVIDING MUTLI-RESONANT RESPONSE

ABSTRACT

The impact of cross-section symmetry breaking on the frequency response for a rectangular waveguide section having two transversal rectangular inserts is studied. The multi-resonant character of the response is the focus of our investigation. The spectral theory of open waveguide resonators is applied to reveal the physical nature of the resonant phenomena arising in the section. The scattering and the spectral characteristics of a rectangular waveguide section are investigated. It is shown that the observed total reflections are inherently 'trapped-mode' resonances. They are caused by the excitation of a pair of natural oscillations of complex frequencies. The spectral domain solution allows us to give precise predictions for the locations and the quality factors of the resonances. The entire response is accurately approximated in the operating range as well. The broken symmetry waveguide sections proposed in the present paper are promising key-elements providing additional transmission zero generation with no additional coupling units.
