ABSTRACT

Microwave radio propagation over the Pacific ocean is considered. The basic radio meteorological parameters responsible for the observed electromagnetic field levels have been established through comparison of the measured results with theory. The signal attenuation owing to wave scattering from the refractive index inhomogeneities in the air, as well as to sea roughness is considered.
It is shown that the atmospheric ducts existing over coastal areas of oceans are determined by the character of the air masses moving over the sea. A dry and warm air mass moving over the sea powerful can give rise to ducting channels, greatly exceeding evaporation ducts in height and extending to a few hundred kilometers.
