ABSTRACT

In order to find important factors which could affect laser ablative micropropulsion, three laser beams and two energetic materials were used to study the interaction relationships. For all the beams, with the increase of laser duration, the impulse increased but Cm, Isp, and η decreased. The round beam has a higher Isp, and η under the same pulse duration due to the highest power intensity. Rectangular beam just has the highest impulse under the same laser energy density. Under a rectangular beam of 400 µm × 10 µm, GAP showed a better propulsion performance than DBP. GAP with a thickness of 50 µm exhibited a better performance than the GAP with a thickness of 30 µm. If a higher power density from a laser with a rectangular beam can be available by compressing the beam further or by improving the laser power, even higher propulsion performance can be expected.
