SHOCK WAVE SENSITIVITY OF NITROMETHANE MIXTURES WITH NONEXPLOSIVE LIQUIDS

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the binary mixtures of nitromethane with methanol (to 38%) and nitrobenzene (to 43%). Shock wave generators that conform to limit conditions for developing energy release (thermal explosion) were selected. Measurements of particle velocities by electromagnetic method permitted us to obtain the data on initiating shock wave pressures. The limit initiating pressure dependences on nonexplosive liquid content were established. These dependences turned out to be linear, such that at limit pressure values in mixtures with nitrobenzene, dependences were somewhat increasing and in mixtures with methanol they were somewhat decreasing. The latter does not mean that some increasing in a shock wave sensibility is taking place. In both mixtures the dilution of nitromethane with nonexplosive components resulted in decreasing shock wave sensitivity.
