INSENSITIVE CL-20/CYCLOTETRAMETHYLENETETRANITRAMINE (HMX) CO-CRYSTALS WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE BY ULTRASONIC IN SOLVENT

ABSTRACT

CL-20/cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) co-crystal explosive in a 2:1 molar ratio was prepared by liquid-phase ultrasonic method. A polarized optical microscope (POM) was used to characterize the particle size and morphology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were utilized to determine whether the co-crystal explosive was prepared. Furthermore, the impact sensitivity of co-crystal explosive was tested and analyzed. The results show that the prepared sample is not the mix of CL-20 and HMX but rather CL-20/HMX co-crystal explosive. The particle size of co-crystal explosive is about 20 μm and it exhibits a plate-like morphology. The peak decomposition temperature of co-crystal explosive is 246.31°C, which is 4.53°C lower than that of CL-20. Its thermal decomposition enthalpy is 151 J/g less than CL-20. It can be concluded that its thermal security is approximately the same as CL-20. The characteristic height of CL-20/HMX co-crystal explosive is 32.8 cm, which increases by 19.7 cm and 13.2 cm compared with CL-20 and HMX, respectively. Its impact sensitivity is superior to HMX.
