Identification of Boundary Condition at the Supported Edge of Monolithic Thin Main Mirror of Space Telescope

The clamping ring-shape device is considered as a thin elastic beam of rectangular cross-section. It is demonstrated, that the beam stiffness significantly affects mirror flexibility. An algorithm of identification of ring parameters on the basis of measurements of mirror deflections under its own weight is suggested. Parameters to be identified and their number depending on the mirror thickness are established. In the case of a thick mirror, one parameter defining bending stiffness of the ring should be identified while for a thin one two parameters should be identified. They determine bending and tension. In the second case, iterative step-by-step improvement of each parameter is used. The identification process is demonstrated by three stages: an experiment with a known ring is simulated; parameters of the ring are assumed unknown and are identified; deformation of mirror with identified parameters is modelled and compared with the model experiment. Accuracy of the suggested method is demonstrated.
