NUMERICAL STUDY OF PARTICLE TRANSPORT IN A RIVER WITH A LATERAL HARBOR BASIN

ABSTRACT

In this study, the development and application of two mathematical models used to investigate particle transport in a river with a lateral harbor basin are presented: a two-dimensional depth-averaged hydrodynamic model and a quasi-three-dimensional sediment transport model. The first mathematical model resulted to the velocity field that was then used as an input parameter in the second mathematical-transport model, which included processes of advection, diffusion, and sedimentation of conservative suspended matter. The results of the simulations led to the temporal and spatial distribution of the sediment concentrations after the initial release at a specific location of the river. Special attention was given to the sediments trapped in the harbor laterally to the main course of the river.
