MULTIPLE SCENARIOS INTEGRATED UPSCALING WITH FULL TENSOR EFFECTS OF FRACTURED RESERVOIRS

ABSTRACT

A new transmissibility upscaling approach is developed to effectively capture the full tensor effects when upscaling from discrete fractured models. The approach is based on a global upscaling technique with an output least-squares method. Transmissibility upscaling methods under two-point flux approximation schemes are widely used for their intuitive and robust performance. However, the heterogeneity of the fine-scale model will usually result in full tensor effects for the coarse models, especially in the fractured reservoirs where the fractures act as high-speed channels for flows. Hence, we propose to compute a coarse-scale transmissibility field that allows for full tensor effects and can be generally applied into variable flow situations. The new approach is applied in several examples. It turns out that the approach has a robust performance when applied in different simulation scenarios.
