Low-Frequency High-Energy Pulsations in the Processes of Heat and Mass Transfer

ABSTRACT

Studies of the dynamics of heat and mass transfer fluctuations demonstrate that high-energy pulsations with a fluctuation power spectrum inversely proportional to frequency (flicker or 1/f fluctuations) are observed in crisis and transition regimes. Such a spectrum implies energy transfer from high-frequency to low-frequency modes and a possibility of large-scale catastrophic swings in the system. The theory shows that such fluctuations arise in the system due to simultaneous occurrence of interacting phase transitions in the presence of white noise of sufficient intensity. The distribution function of fluctuations in scaling transformations of the system of stochastic equations that describes generation of 1/f noise has been studied. It is demonstrated that in scaling transformation the Gaussian distribution of a random process with the 1/f spectrum changes to an exponential distribution, characteristic of the statistics of extremum swings. The probability of such swings should be taken into account in predicting the stability of various heat transfer regimes.
