Mathematical Modeling to Estimate the Critical Oil Flow Rate for Sand Production Onset in the Mansouri Oil Field with a Stabilized Finite Element Method

ABSTRACT

In this article, a mathematical model is presented for the calculation of a critical oil production rate to prevent sand production in sandstone reservoirs. For this propose, the reservoir is modeled based on a fully coupled reservoir-geomechanic equation with the elastic behavior assumption for reservoir formation. The proposed model will result in a set of equations that extend into two dimensions. A stabilized finite element method is used to solve the proposed model, resulting in the pressure, displacement, normal, and shear stress profiles around the well in the reservoir. The Mohr-Coulomb criterion is applied to analyze the failure phenomenon and critical oil flow rate estimation. The model is applied to the Mansouri oil field in Ahvaz using the real available field data. The results are in good agreement with the operating field data. Moreover, the effect of different parameters, such as permeability and cohesive strength, on the failure function was investigated.
