Effect of Thermal Modulation on the Onset of Centrifugally Driven Convection in a Rotating Vertical Porous Layer Placed Far Away from the Axis of Rotation

ABSTRACT

The linear stability of centrifugally driven convection in a rotating vertical porous layer has been investigated under modulated temperature on the boundaries. The Coriolis effect has also been taken into account. The Darcy equation (excluding the gravitation term) has been used to describe the flow. A perturbation method based on the small amplitude of imposed temperature modulation is used to calculate the critical centrifugal Rayleigh number. The correction in the critical Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of frequency of modulation, Vadasz number, and Taylor number. The effect of various physical parameters was found to be significant at moderate values of the modulation frequency. It is also found that using thermal modulation, it is possible to delay the onset of convection by proper tuning of the modulation frequency.
