Flow over a Porous Block in an Open Cavity: Effect of Block Aspect Ratio and Porosity on the Heat Transfer Characteristics

ABSTRACT

Porous structures enhance the performance of heat transferring devices through improving the Nusselt number associated with the heat transferring surfaces. In the present study, flow over a porous block heated in an open cavity is considered and the flow field and heated transfer rates are computed for the various porosities and aspect ratios of the block. A numerical scheme using a control volume approach is used to discretize the governing equations of the flow. The grid-independent tests are conducted to secure the grid-independent solutions. It is found that the aspect ration and porosity of the block have a significant effect on the flow field in the cavity and the cooling rates of the block. The Nusselt number increases while the Grashoff number decreases with increasing porosities and aspect ratios of the block.
