ABSTRACT

A short review of vapordynamic thermosyphon (VDT) designs and applications is presented including the schematic, principles of VDT action, its main parameters, and thermal control of different heat loaded devices. A VDT with porous coating of the evaporator ensures a heat transfer enhancement up to 5 times compared with the plain tube evaporator and starts to work without a temperature overshoot typical for conventional thermosyphons. The two-phase flow generation and dynamic interaction between the liquid slugs and vapor bubbles in the annular mini channel of the VDT condenser are the main features of such thermosyphon, which allows its thermodynamic efficiency to increase. Visual analysis (glass condenser) and experimental results obtained with propane as a working fluid show that micro/nano coating of the outer wall of the vapor pipe inside the VDT condenser is favorable for the heat transfer enhancement at heat fluxes <50 kW/m2. Some practical applications of VDTs were considered.
