ENHANCED HEAT TRANSFER IN CORRUGATED-PLATE CHANNELS WITH NON-NEWTONIAN POWER-LAW FLUID FLOWS

摘要

Heat transfer enhancement in flows of fluids with shear-thinning, power-law rheology in sinusoidal corrugated-plate channels of plate-and-frame heat exchangers (PHE) is investigated. With channel plates at uniform wall temperature, periodically developed flows are considered for a wide range of plate corrugation aspect ratio (0 ≤ γ ≤ 1), flow rates (10 ≤ Reg ≤ 1500), and pseudoplastic flow indices (n = 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0). A strong influence of γ is seen in the convective field, with two distinct flow regimes: undisturbed laminar or non-swirl flow, and lateral vortex dominated swirl flow. In the former, contoured streamline flow prevails with no cross-stream disturbance, though fluid shear-thinning decreases the Fanning friction factor f and enhances the Colburn factor j. In the swirl regime, transverse vortices are generated due to flow separation and reattachment in the corrugation troughs that expand and strengthen with Reg and γ. The regime transition depends on Reg, γ, and n, and occurs at lower flow rates with increasing pseudoplasticity. The interplay of flow-duct geometry and non-Newtonian rheology produces enhancement, as measured by the factor (j /f), of over 3.3 times that in a flat-plate channel.
