ABSTRACT

Convection heat transfer in mini-fin structures was numerically simulated for mini-fin dimensions of 0.8 mm × 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm × 0.8 mm. The numerical calculations analyzed the three-dimensional flow field and accounted for conduction within the fins. The computations were conducted for the inlet water velocities between 0.08 and 0.19 m/s which represent the Reynolds number from 550 to 1300 with the corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the fin width Ww and the maximum channel velocity of 120−450. The velocity and temperature fields in the mini-fin structures are presented. The numerical results for the local heat transfer coefficient for water in the mini-fin structures corresponded well with experimental data. For the studied conditions, the heat transfer coefficients and the j-factor with the triangular mini-fin arrangement were the largest of the four designs for water. The values of (Nu/Nu0)/(f/f0)1/3 for all four test sections were larger than one.
