The Effects of Vortex Structures on Heat Transfer and Flow Field behind Arrays of Vortex Generators

ABSTRACT

The effect of arrays of single-body, delta-shaped vortex generators on heat transfer and flow field has been investigated numerically using RANS methods. This type of vortex generators has shown very promising characteristics regarding heat transfer enhancement and total pressure loss. The Reynolds numbers range from 80,000 to 600,000. A differential Reynolds stress turbulence model and an explicit algebraic model for the turbulent heat flux have been used to capture the anisotropic effects of the induced vortex structures. Simultaneously to the calculations, Particle Image Velocimetry and Thermochromic Liquid Crystal measurements have been performed on some of the geometries to validate the numerical results.
