MULTIPOINT CALIBRATION TECHNIQUE OF LIQUID CRYSTAL THERMOMETRY AND ITS APPLICATION TO THREE- DIMENSIONAL TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT OF THERMAL CONVECTION

ABSTRACT

The temperature calibration technique of liquid crystal thermometry has been studied by various calibration methods in HSI color space and with the multipoint calibration technique to consider the viewing angle effect of the liquid crystals. The calibration errors for various calibration methods are evaluated on the basis of uniform temperature images obtained from the present experiment. It is found that the calibration errors are significantly reduced when the full-color HSI calibration is combined with multipoint calibration using the B-spline fitting technique. These calibration methods are applied to the measurement of a three-dimensional temperature field of thermal convection over a heated surface by scanning a light sheet and a camera and capturing a number of color images at various planar cross sections. The reconstructed temperature distributions show the generation of thermal structures over a heated surface, which indicates the usefulness of the present experimental methods.
