SYNCHRONIZED SMOKE-WIRE TECHNIQUE FOR FLOW VISUALIZATION OF TURBULENT FLOWS

ABSTRACT

The key factor in obtaining clear flow images of highly turbulent flow is to make the exposure time as short as possible, in addition to strong light intensity. The problem can be solved by using a pulsed light source having extremely short pulse width (e.g., Nd:YAG laser pulse < 10 nm). For such a pulsed light source, a precise synchronizing device consisting of the main and complimentary circuits was developed to synchronize the pulsed laser light with image recording devices. The electric power supplied to the smoke-wire was also synchronized to get better flow images. In order to check its usefulness, the developed smoke-wire system was applied to a turbulent boundary layer and to an impinging jet flow. From these applications, clear flow visualization images were obtained by synchronizing the Nd:YAG laser light sheet with the image recording devices. The front and top views of the turbulent watt-layer visualized with a high-speed CCD camera clearly show the longitudinal vortex structure above the flat plate. The visualized impinging jet flow shows the vortex eddy structures on the impingement plate exactly at the peak locations of the local heat transfer rate.
