ABSTRACT

This paper deals with an experimental study of the thermal perturbation produced in the surrounding medium by a cylindrical arc plasma column operating in pure argon at atmospheric pressure. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer operating with a He-Ne laser allows carrying out radial temperature profiles from the axis of the plasma column up to a few diameters of the plasma column in the surrounding gas. We propose a simple model based on a pure conductive heat transfer process, and we give a comparison of experimental data with theoretical predictions. In addition, we introduce the notion of Arc Thermal Interaction Radius in order to quantitatively characterize the area perturbed by the arc plasma column.
