NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF ELLIPTICAL MIXED EXPANSION NOZZLE PERFORMANCE IN SUPERSONIC FLOW

The results of a numerical investigation of the aero-gasdynamic characteristics of an elliptical mixed expansion nozzle at supersonic speed of the external flow are presented. Numerical simulations are performed based on the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations in a thin layer approximation using the differential k-ε turbulence model, which takes into account the effect of the wall. The performance of the elliptical nozzle is compared to the performance of an equivalent rectangular mixed expansion nozzle with equal relative areas of the nozzle midsection and entry. The results on the effect of the nozzle pressure ratio (NRP) and the shapes of the nozzle cross section on the thrust characteristics are presented. The thrust coefficient varies non-monotonically, reaching a maximum value within the analyzed interval of the NRP. It is shown that the width of the cowl sharp edge has a small effect on the thrust characteristics of the elliptical mixed expansion nozzle. It is determined that the nozzle with round entry and the elliptical nozzle, in which the major semi-axis at the entry is much smaller than the ellipse semi-axis at the cowl exit, have the worst thrust characteristics.
