NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SECONDARY SEPARATION IN A SUBSONIC FLOW OVER A BACKWARD-FACING STEP

ABSTRACT

A numerical investigation of the internal structure of the separation zone based on the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations for subsonic turbulent flow over a backward-facing step has been carried out. The numerical estimation of the size of the secondary separation zone using two turbulence models has shown that with an increase in the Reynolds number, the secondary separation region behind the backward-facing step decreases. In order to prove the absence of three-dimensional (3D) effects in the flow, the problem has been also considered in 3D formulation.
