EVAPORATION OF WATER SPRAY FROM A ROTARY BELL ATOMIZER USING A PHASE DOPPLER ANEMOMETER

ABSTRACT

A vehicle's exterior finish is an important challenge for the automotive industry. Evaporation of paint solvents is a significant part of a factory's environmental footprint. Rotary bell atomizers (RBAs) create a fine spray, which leads to a good quality finish yet can be efficiently applied. Different process parameters and finished quality of the paint are related to the evaporation of the paint spray. A phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) can be used to calculate the evaporation of spray. In these experiments, water was sprayed from an RBA and a PDA was used to calculate the volume flux. The change in flux between consecutive planes was found to be significant, which demonstrates that evaporation can be quantified using PDA flux measurements.
