ABSTRACT

Experiments demonstrate that a small steplike change in diameter placed near the orifice inlet has noticeable effects on the droplet size distribution in the resulting spray. Additionally, the driving pressure required to produce hydraulic flip is increased substantially, allowing greater mass flow through a given diameter orifice. Measurements show that the stream-wise extent of the cavitation at the inlet is substantially reduced by this step, leading to the increased operating pressure range. The fluid mechanisms creating the performance changes need to be investigated.
