ABSTRACT

The advent of the aging society challenges politicians, policymakers, and philosophers alike. The challenges of the post-aging society are yet to be afforded due consideration. Written as a first-author perspective by a UK Prime Minister, who presides over a nation in which the life expectancy exceeds 1000 years, this article explores the paradox of longevity and the definition of health. That is, by living longer, to create a healthier life we necessarily augment the burden of chronic disease upon society. The evolutionary aspirations of the human race−autonomy, sustainability, and consequences to our planet−all comprise our optimal vision of health in this long-living society. We argue that, in the quest to create a healthier society, we must reconcile these competing factors by understanding setbacks of the past to address the predicaments of the present and future.
