Intensification of phytoplankton development in a buffer reservoir of the by-product coking industry

ABSTRACT

Complex hydro-chemical, algological and microbiological investigations of an aerobic-anaerobic buffer pond collecting and stabilizing conventionally purified sewage from the town of Avdeevka and the by-product coking plant was carried out. It has been found that the pond water was strongly polluted by suspended and dissolved organic (including color) and mineral substances. The reservoir has an unfavorable oxygen regime as well as Corg:Nmin:Pmin ratios. That slows down the processes of primary production and destruction. The mentioned abiotic conditions cause poor qualitative and quantitative development of algae, A high density of bacterioplankton, and the presence of saprophytic phenol-oxidizing bacteria, as well as bacteria of the Escherichia coli group, point to disruptions in the process of formulation and precipitation of active mud flakes and to the inflow of its finely dispersed particles from the aeration station. The authors give recommendations on how to improve purification and stabilization technology for conventionally purified sewage in the buffer pond.
