Distribution of Freshwater Blue-Green Algae (Cyanophyta) in Northeastern Pakistan

Two hundred and eleven species of planktic, edaphic, epipsammic, epiphytic, epioikotic, and epilithic blue-green algae were collected from unexplored freshwater habitats in the province of the Punjab and North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan as well as Azad Kashmir during July 1978 to August 2000. Among them, 19 genera and 88 species are recorded for the first time from Pakistan. Members of the class Nostocophyceae with 158 species were found to be more prevalent than those of the class Chroocophyceae with 53 species. Oscillatoria with 34 species was the most commonly occurring genus. Greatest species diversity was exhibited by the collections made at Lahore and neighboring areas. Heterotrichous species were only scarcely observed. The growth of blue-green algae was most abundant in the aquatic environment, especially in the planktic state, than in the terrestrial environment under benthic conditions. High temperature (up to 48 °C) with rainfall, intense sunlight, and stagnant water with pH 7.5 appeared the most suitable conditions for their growth. They were mostly found to grow in summer, but some of them occurred in winter also.
