ABSTRACT

Phenol and three nitrophenols [o-nitrophenol (ONP), m-nitrophenol (MNP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP)], pollutants commonly occurring in natural ecosystems, were tested for their toxic effects on soil isolates of Anabaena cylindrica Lemm. and Nostoc muscorum Ag. (cyanobacteria) growing under phototrophic conditions in chemostat cultures. The toxicity criteria included growth rate, heterocyst frequency, chlorophyll a, O2-evolution, O2-uptake, total carbohydrates, total proteins, and the activities of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase. Nostoc muscorum seemed to be more sensitive than A. cylindrica on selected phenolic compounds. The toxicity of these compounds to growth of both cyanobacteria followed the order: ONP > MNP > PNP > phenol. The reduced level of nitrogenase by phenolic compounds is, however, due to the reduction of photosynthetic electron transport (O2-evolution) and/or the reduction of heterocyst frequency. The rate of nitrate reduction was also reduced in concomitance with the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport. The results of the present work suggest that phenolics, if accumulated at sufficiently high levels in soils, could pose a threat to survival or metabolism of cyanobacteria.
