ABSTRACT

The agar-producing alga, Anfeltia tobuchiensis (Kanno et Matsub.) Makijenko, grows unattached, forming large, monodominant sub-surface beds up to 1 m in depth in bays and sheltered area in the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk with an estimated standing crop of 230.000 tons. The physiological responses to photosynthetically available radiation (PAR), temperature and nutrients are detailed. The alga grows over a wide range of these parameters, can survive under conditions of very low light irradiance experienced in the lower half of the beds and reabsorbs exuded organic substances. The hydrodynamic conditions in the beds and the hydrographic patterns in the bays are described. Productivity estimates based on the data are used to propose crop management and harvesting strategies for economic utilization.
