摘要

Noctiluca scintillans Macartney abundance was studied during August 27th till September 1st 2004, at Minnie Bay, Andaman Islands (11° 41. 40' N, 92° 44' E), India. The bloom showed green color due to parsinophytic endosymbionts present inside the turbid cells, and each turbid cell measured 800−1200 μm. During the study physico-chemical parameters were recorded to determine if there was any linear relationship and depletion in inorganic phosphate and nitrate nitrogen. The phytoplankton and zooplankton were also studied; the abundance of N. scintillans resulted in the regulation of the zooplankton distribution in that surface and in the vertical distribution. The changes in the nutrient influx into the shallow Minnie Bay waters altered its qualities, which in turn affected the phytoplankton community and vice versa. The phytoplankton community coupled with physical and chemical interactions of seawater was also studied. Fish fries were also collected during the bloom using hand nets to study the shoaling patterns of fishes. This large and distinctive bloom forming species has no other inimical effects on higher trophic associates relating to their mortality.
