Agardh are widespread in the continental waters of Europe and Asia. They also play an important role in the phytoepiphyton of the Dnieper cascade and the Lower Dnieper in Ukraine. Representatives of the genus are characterized by wide morphological variability; the study of which is important for the taxonomy of Cymbella and Bacillariophyta as a whole. We studied the morphological variability of some species of the genus using scanning electron microscopy. Samples were taken from semi-aquatic (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) and submerged (Potamogeton pectinatus L., Ceratophyllum demersum L., Myriophyllum spicatum L.) plants. The valves of diatoms were purified from organic substances by the method of cold burning. The valves of common species of the genus((:)) Cymbella (C. helvetica Kutzing, C. neolanceolata W.Silva, C. proxima Reimer, Cymbella subcistula Krammer, C. tumida (Brebisson) Van Heurck) were taken, and used from the phytoepiphyton of Kyiv, Kanevsky, Kremenchug, Dneprodzerzhinsky, Kakhovsky reservoirs and the Lower Dnieper. SEM studies revealed differences from previously published data for a number of diagnostic features (valve length and width, number of striae and areolae in 10 μm). According to the authors, this indicates the presence of interpopulation variability between species. Cymbella neolanceolata shows significant morphological variability; its extended description is presented. The results, on the variability of representatives of the genus Cymbella must be taken into account, both in algological and hydrobiological studies, and in bioindication. %8 2020-07-01
