The present paper outlines these subtleties as well as provides a detailed discussion for the use and implementation of rainbow schlieren deflectometry (RSD) to obtain quantitative measurements in fluid flow systems. Mathematical relationships, numerical algorithms, system design criteria, hardware issues, calibrations, and other details needed for acquiring quantitative data are summarized with the purpose that a researcher can use this work as a guide to implement RSD. Application examples from prior works are highlighted to show the use of RSD to obtain scalar properties such as density, temperature, and mixture fraction in a wide array of fluid flow applications.
