AB Calculations of the volume and surface parameters of cells of 77 species and infraspecific taxa of algae widely distributed in plankton of the Black Sea made it possible, for the first time, to obtain the data on the value of their specific surface. It has been found that the highest values of the specific surface of cells (1.98±0.39) and the lowest values of their volumes (100±73 mm3) and surfaces (79±41.9 mm2) were characteristic of Cyanophyta and Chlomphyta. The lowest values of the specific surface of cells (0.11±0.0008) and me highest values of (heir volumes (32800±6724 mm3) were registered in Dinophyta, whereas the highest values of their surfaces (3019±11.43 mm2) were observed in Bacillariophyta. It was concluded that the algal species characterized by small dimensions, and also by a large specific surface of their cells, dominate in eutrophic parts of the Sea.
