Abstract

Direct numerical simulations of the transport of pulsatile passive scalars in a turbulent channel flow have been performed. Two configurations have been explored: on one hand, conditions far from the wall are pulsed, on the other hand wall conditions are pulsed. A significant amount of data concerning the penetration of the oscillations and their impact on the boundary layer behaviour were obtained. Results were used as input conditions to two wall models, namely the standard wall model (SWM) and the Thin Boundary Layer Equation (TBLE) model. Off-code testing of these two wall models show that TBLE is much more efficient when oscillations come from the walls, whatever the imposed frequency. TBLE is also working better when the outer flow is submitted to temporal variations, even if high frequency phenomena are more difficult to handle for both wall models.
