Abstract

Different two-equation turbulence models are investigated in their performance to predict heat transfer for low Prandtl number fluids in a backward-facing step geometry. A state of the art four-equation heat transfer model is compared to linear and non-linear RANS models and results of a DNS. To increase the physical basis of the linear models, one is exemplarily extended by an explicit algebraic formulation for the Reynolds stresses. The fluid considered is liquid sodium with constant fluid properties at 423K. Simulations are performed for a backward-facing step with a constant heat flux boundary condition applied at the bottom wall downstream the step.
