摘要

The present paper gives an overview of the existing (and sometimes developing) methods for measuring in-situ, with the aid of optical non-intrusive methods, the sizes of particles embedded in flows. Nevertheless, due to the very large topics so involved, where papers are rather proliferating, emphasis will be set on the simultaneous measurements of velocities and sizes. The basic theoretical background for sizing will be first recalled, with insistence on recent advances. Then simultaneous measurements will be discussed for, say, supermicronic particles, namely we shall consider the visibility concept, the pedestal calibration method and the use of corrected top-hat laser beams. The case of submicronic particles will be then examined, namely we shall consider the so-called Diffusion Broadening Spectroscopy (D В S) which is a rather new but very promising method, specially as far as soot diagnosis in flames are concerned. Finally, we shall list miscellaneous systems. Under the linear development of the text, one of the aims will be to dispatch the reader on the very large literature devoted to the matter under discussion.
