ON OR OFF THE TENURE TRACK: THE WORK LIVES OF WOMEN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY1

ABSTRAKT

Given the present critical shortage of skilled science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professionals in the United States, it has become increasingly important for colleges and universities to learn how they might improve their ability to attract and retain women faculty. Using data from a survey of women faculty members of the American Society for Engineering Education, this study examines the work-life balance and job satisfaction of women engineering and technology faculty both on and off the tenure track. Findings indicate that many women faculty fear the consequences of having children before tenure. In response, they may be opting out of the race for tenure in order to achieve what they perceive as a more desirable work-life balance by choosing part-time or nontenure-track academic positions. Recommendations are offered that would encourage women to pursue and remain in tenure-track positions without sacrificing their work-life balance.
