DIFFERENTIAL PHASE SECTIONS BASED ON FORM BIREFRIGENCE IN THE TERAHERTZ FREQUENCY RANGE

ABSTRAKT

The polarization transformers, main elements of which are differential phase sections (DPS), are widely used when developing the THz polarization radio measuring ducts. The use of submillimeter waves allows carrying out investigations in radio astronomy, radio spectroscopy, biology, medicine, physics of the atmosphere, etc. Due to the fact that quasi-optical transmission lines are used in the terahertz frequency range the application of optical principles, when developing the DFS based on birefringent dielectrics, is justified. Some crystals (sapphire, Iceland spar, quartz, etc.) have this property. The artificial dielectric structures having the form birefringence property and the structure period commensurable with the wavelength are considered in the paper. Numerical method of integral functionals in the frequency domain is applied for full-wave scattering problem solution. This method is based on three-dimensional integral equations for the equivalent electric and magnetic polarization currents of periodic medium. The conditions of such structures matching with free space are also examined. The matching is performed using dielectric layers. The experimental study of such DFS models is carried out. The results confirm the correctness of the choice of such structures and the conditions of their matching.
