HEAT TRANSFER DURING THE SPREADING AND SOLIDIFICATION OF A MOLTEN METAL DROPLET ON A COOLED SUBSTRATE
ABSTRAKT
This paper presents an experimental study of the solidification of a molten metal drop after its impact on a cold substrate. Temperature measurements were conducted during the spreading process of the drop in the drop and the substrate. The spreading of the molten metal drop was visualized and linked to the heat transfer process. The thermal contact resistance between casting and substrate was estimated by matching the experimental data with the predictions of 1-D heat transfer model. Some results are presented to illustrate the effect of the casting material and its thermophysical properties on the heat transfer at the interface between casting and the substrate.
