PREDICTION OF BOREHOLE CLEANING AND HOLE INSTABILITY FOR DRILLING FLUID FLOW THROUGH ANNULUS USING MINI-PILOT PLANT SETUP

ABSTRAKT

Bore hole cleaning and the hole instability are two important issues associated with any well drilling program. Wellbore cleaning and wellbore instability (enlargement) can be judged by the cuttings bed formations and severity of the wear effects caused by the drilling fluid on the wall of the well, respectively. In the present investigation, first, the interrelationship between bore hole cleaning and hole instability is described. Second, the flow of the drilling mud through a mini-pilot plant of a pipe and concentric annulus are studied experimentally in the light of predicting the cuttings bed formation features and wear rate caused by the drilling fluids on the wellbore walls. The effects of the various factors, such as the eccentricity ratio, radius ratio, bulk slurry velocity, particle size distribution, particle concentration, and different types of additives, are discussed based on these two important and related phenomena of bore hole cleaning and hole instability.
