SPRAY SYNTHESIS OF SUPERPLASTIC MATERIALS FOR NEAR-NET-SHAPE MANUFACTURING

ABSTRAKT

Spray deposition was used to synthesize 5083 Al alloy with N2 and N2 + O2 mixture as atomization gases. The starting 5083 Al was alloyed with Zr during spray deposition in order to refine grain size. It was noted that the grains that were present in as-spray deposited 5083 Al were equiaxed. In the inert gas spray deposited alloys, grain size decreased with increasing Zr content. Reactive spray deposition using N2 + O2 mixture, however, led to an increase in average grain size which is considered a result of release of enthalpy during oxidation reaction of matrix alloys. The spray deposited alloys were thermomechanically processed using extrusion and multiple-pass warm rolling to further reduce grain size. Superplasticity was observed in the 500−550 °C temperature range for strain rates between 3 × 10−5 and 3 × 10−3 s−1. A maximum elongation of 465% was noted at 550% and 3 × 10−5 s−1. The spray deposited alloys thermomechanically processed by direct rolling, exhibited superplasticity in the same temperature and strain rate ranges as those for the extruded and rolled materials. The superplastic elongation of the spray formed and rolled material was relatively low, being in the range of 180 ∼ 260%.
