OH CONCENTRATION MEASUREMENTS IN A JET ENGINE EXHAUST

ABSTRAKT

Aerosol precursor emissions from jet engines are related to the emission of sulfur(VI) in the form of SO3. Conversion of SO2 to SO3 occurs via the reactions OH + SO2 HOSO2 followed by HOSO2 + O2 SO3 + HO2. The efficiency is critically dependent on the concentration of OH, which was measured using laser-induced fluorescence at the exit of a rig designed to simulate the thermodynamic processes involved in the expansion of gases through the turbine and nozzle stages of a jet engine. OH concentrations on the order of 1 × 1010 molecules cm−3 were obtained.
