Ways and Mechanisms of Transmembrane Exchange of Ca2+ in Mitochondria

ABSTRAKT

The review analyzes the literature data on transport systems for calcium ions in mitochondria and presents some own results of experiments performed on the uterus smooth muscle (myometrium). In particular, systems of mitochondrial Ca2+-uniporter, rapid calcium uptake, mitochondrial ryanodine receptor, Na+-Ca2+ and H+-Ca2+-exchangers, mitochondrial permeability transition pores are described. The possible functional role of calcium ions in mitochondria and their significance in maintaining Ca2+-homeostasis of cells has been considered. Features of mitochondrial transmembrane Ca2+ exchange in various pathologies are discussed.
