ON THE POSSIBILITY OF RECOVERING SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF IONOSPHERIC INHOMOGENEITIES USING DATA FROM IMAGING RIOMETERS
ABSTRAKT
A technique is suggested for recovering spatial distribution of ionospheric inhomogeneities of the F-region using measurements of scintillation indices of the radiation from discrete cosmic sources observed simultaneously by several imaging HF riometers. The method is illustrated by an example of observations of the polar ionosphere by two multi-beam riometers located in the Northern hemisphere at the Gakona and Poker Flat Observatories (Alaska, USA). The sounding signals have been the radiation arriving through the ionosphere from four strongest discrete cosmic HF radio sources which are Cassiopeia A, Cygnus A, Taurus A and Virgo A. The influence of the auroral activity on the scintillation index magnitude is shown. The potential of the suggested technique is analyzed with respect to its implementation in the Northern Europe region where a considerable number of operational imaging riometers is located.
