ABSTRAKT

Candidiasis is a common fungal infection caused by yeasts belonging to the genus Candida and includes mucosal candidiasis, cutaneous candidiasis, and systemic candidiasis. Candida yeasts generally present in healthy humans as components of the microbiome. The host defense system typically protects the surface barriers of the body by various components; however, a failure in this system may result in candidiasis. Agaricus brasiliensis is a well-known health food that induces the production of protective antibodies against fungal β-glucans. In the present study, we examined immunochemical similarities in the polysaccharide components of clinically isolated Candida spp. and A. brasiliensis. The results obtained showed that the hot water extract of A. brasiliensis (AgHWE) strongly reacted with those of clinically isolated Candida spp. (CAHWE). Furthermore, not only β-glucans but also mannan were identified as cross-reactive antigens. These results strongly suggest that A. brasiliensis is capable of enhancing protective immunity against Candida spp.
