Installation Effects of a Clamp-On Transit Time Ultrasonic Flow Meter
ABSTRAKT
In the present era of development in the country, the measurement of flow rates through large size pipelines is very significant for effective utilization of available resources. The uncertainty in flow measurement assumes greater importance when fluid is supplied on chargeable basis. Fulfillment of stipulated requirement of upstream and downstream straight length is one of the important prerequisite to achieve the claimed uncertainty in flow measurement. The latest flow measuring technique, clamp-on type ultrasonic flow meter, is being used in many applications in view of its merit of non-intrusive technique. Many a time, the site constraints do not permit to provide straight lengths recommended by the BIS. ISO/IEC Standards, leading to error in flow measurement. In such cases International Standards do not indicate the possible extent of deviation of measured flow rate from its true value, when recommended straight lengths are not met. This paper highlights to quantify the probable errors in flow measurements with ultrasonic flow meter for various cases where adequate straight lengths are not available between the different combinations of elbows and flow measuring section of the pipe with various distances, viz. (1... 12)D. The research findings will enable to predict the expected value of true flow rate with fair uncertainty for the value of flow rate measured by flow meter which had to be installed at a non standard location, owing to site constraints. These results were established with the help of high precision test circuit with volumetric flow measurement.
