ABSTRAKT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is currently a costly epidemic, and the potential exists for even further economic implications, with 20% of the world's adults presently afflicted. The Bone and Joint Decade declaration by the federal government has catapulted research into uncovering the etiology and transforming the pathophysiology of OA into sensitive and efficient means of diagnosing and treating OA. The development of valid and reliable assays is paving the way to the discovery of new biological serum and tissue markers. Novel therapeutic regimens are being developed. Some have completed FDA testing, and others are underway. The knee is only one constituent of the human body commonly affected by OA. Although this review mainly addresses OA of the knee, many of the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches mentioned might be applied to other areas influenced by OA, as well.
